Neal Solo
This is not Old Love.
Singer/songwriter Neal Hagberg (of Neal & Leandra) releases a solo CD, "It's Not As Simple As It Seems," unlike anything you've ever heard from him. Instead of reducing issues to sound bites, the 14 songs on this CD
put a human face on the suffering we experience and, subsequently,
cause in the world. No topic is off limits - war, homophobia, abortion,
religious fundamentalism, or even forgiveness.
Please scroll down below the CD to check out some words from Neal regarding this project and for some discussion points on the issues brought forth on this CD. Also, feel free to check out and contribute to the forum. This page is to be used to discuss the songs and whatever experiences they bring up in you.

IMAGINE THAT
She was glad the day John Lennon died She kept her feelings hid inside But she cried when the mourners cried Because he died not knowing Christ She said he was a dangerous man He thought he could play with God’s own plan So God struck him down with his right hand For his unrepentant pride CHORUS: She is a Christian And she will follow Christ And Jesus died for all our sins And she is really nice She loves her children And teaches them their prayers And at the end of every day She climbs up her stairs And sleeps sound in her bed up there When Matthew Shepard died that way Strung up and tied like a bale of hay She said it wouldn’t have happened if he weren’t gay I’m not saying it’s right that it did But if he would just have accepted Christ Jesus can heal that kind of life I’m sorry for the way he died But just look at the way he lived CHORUS BRIDGE: Imagine, imagine, imagine that And on the day we went to war She said do you know what we’re fighting for The chance for unsaved babies to know the Lord So they won’t have to go to hell The only way to set them free Is Jesus and democracy We’ve been called to help them see What they can’t see for themselves CHORUS words and music by Neal Hagberg c 2004 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

Something’s wrong, she moved before But she’s hardly moving anymore The doctor says it’s nothing he foresaw It’s four hundred miles to Wichita Chorus: It’s the loneliest road Did I break some law All I know is it’s four hundred miles To Wichita All those faces screaming Jesus’ name Heaping shame on top of my shame All those signs about my God I walk through the lines of Wichita Chorus Bridge: Mother of mercy, rock me to sleep Are you in this room or out on those streets Where are the hands to deliver me God Here in the cradle of Wichita Let me hold what might have been Her name is Grace, now say your amen And I’ll go home to mourn my loss Four hundred miles from Wichita Chorus: It’s the loneliest sound A cry so soft All I know is it’s four hundred miles To Wichita words and music by Neal Hagberg c 2005 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

MERCY
He took her, they said he took her hard Beneath the motion sensor in our back yard Moths swirling round, hand over her mouth All her thoughts were going south She just waited it out She just waited it out They tracked him down, locked him away For what that boy did to my girl that day Do you know what it’s like to go to sleep at night Cry yourself awake, find your dreams have died ‘Cause something new was inside Something new was inside Tell me this all isn’t true Tell me what I should do Tell me that mercy is infinite That child in her, how could she keep him Born straight out of a monster’s sin I’m a Christian I told my girl But some things aren’t meant to walk this world That baby is one of them That baby is one of them Tell me this all isn’t true Tell me what I should do Tell me that mercy is infinite She cried hard, tried to explain It ain’t the baby’s fault, I’m not ashamed He needs a home, he deserves a name I’ll give him mine, you’re not to blame Daddy, you’re not to blame Daddy Tell me this all isn’t true Tell me what I should do Tell me that mercy is infinite Tell me that mercy is infinite words and music by Neal Hagberg c2004 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

They’re coming for you with torches bright Marching on the the blackest night They’ve got a spin to make you reel This ain’t your father’s Oldsmobile Subtler than the Ku Klux Klan Smoother than McCarthy’s plan Their voice has an angelic ring You won’t know what is happening They’re coming for you Painting on their heavenly smiles They’ll march you out in single file Singing hymns to the holy One Daring you to cut and run They dress like sheep but they are wolves They’ll tear your flesh and burn your books Break your back with the shepherd’s rod Then feed you to their monster God They’re coming for you They’re coming for you They’ll kill the dove and wash their hands Hold aloft the olive branch Toss it to the frenzied horde Dance and shout and praise the Lord They’re coming for your children’s bones Claiming God is theirs alone Feed them lies like candy canes Til poison slowly fills their veins They’re coming for you They’re coming for you And if you step out of their line Watch your back, they’re right behind They’ll push you off their cliff of truth In God’s own name they’ll bury you You think it’s best to maybe wait You think I overestimate If you think that then think again I know because I am one of them They’re coming for you They’re coming for you, they’re coming, they’re coming words and music by Neal Hagberg c 2007 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

If grace is true, God will save you And all the Jews, and Hitler, too Those with an overflowing cup And those who want to blow us up All little children will get in With those who stole their innocence Who once were children just like them And will be children once again But we know grace is not fair And that is something we can’t bear So we take eternal truth And snuff it out that’s what we do Replace it with a temporal flame One that we control and tame And here’s the rub, though we have stayed And say we’ve kept the narrow way And kept the unclean ones away God welcomes us in anyway If grace is true words and music by Neal Hagberg c 2008 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

I looked the girl in the eyes She could have been my daughter I pulled the trigger, closed my eyes And cut her down like water What do you do, some of these people are nuts And we are tense and tired When she came walking up to me I thought that she was wired This is not what I do back at home I teach science to seventh graders But no one knows the chemistry That turns us into haters All I wanted was a little extra cash You know teachers don’t make a killing A few reservist weekend stints To save for college for my children I’m alive and she is not This world is one soul lighter But she is pressing down on me And I can’t breathe and I can’t see The noose is getting tighter I’m walking in a dream to night She’s walking there beside me She smiles and reaches out a hand I think she came to guide me But her hand has turned to blood And it’s all over my hands I wake up in a pool of sweat In a land that isn’t my land Repeat Chorus I’m just trying to do what is best I’m just trying to follow orders I’m just trying to help these people out While I’m dodging goddamned mortars What do you think one of these crazies would do If they faced down my daughter Would they risk it all and trust her smile Or cut her down like water Repeat Chorus I looked the girl in the eyes, I looked the girl in the eyes, I looked that girl in the eyes words and music by Neal Hagberg c2005 Uncle Gus Music/BMI www.nealandleandra.com |

When that morning comes where no secret’s hid Will they be undone all these things I did All my words in haste, will they be unsaid All my fiery thoughts, all my stubbornness When that morning comes When that morning comes with a breaking sky Will God welcome us with a lullaby And with open arms to be gathered in Will she rock away my countless sins When that morning comes Oh, my soul cries Oh, my life is slipping by All my dreams and fears Will they one day disappear When that morning comes So clear When God gathers up all my enemies And sits them down at the feast with me Will I pour their wine, will I break their bread Will we laugh and shake our wondering heads When that morning comes Chorus Here comes that morning I see it coming It’s shining for you It’s shining for me It’s shining for all my enemies words and music by Neal Hagberg c 2008 Uncle Gus Music www.nealandleandra.com |

A few words from Neal
You may choose to listen to this recording all the way through in one sitting. Or you may choose to listen to one song at a time, then turn off the music and sit with it. The songs are meant to be used for reflection and conversation. They are meant to put a human face on the suffering we experience and, subsequently, cause each other in this world.
I struggled many months deciding whether or not to put this out as it is, thinking I should make it more palatable to people, and certainly more marketable. But it seemed to want to be what it is before you. Strangely enough, these songs give me comfort. I can’t explain why, but they do.
If an organization you are involved with would be interested in a workshop, artist in residency, or concert, that is available.
-- Thanks, Neal
Discussion Points
Here are some questions to ask as discussion starters with family, friends, organizations, or even people you would consider adversaries.
If you choose to do this with a group, I would recommend that ground rules be laid, so that everyone can express their experience in safety, acknowledging that everyone’s experience is different in regards to how they will react to the songs.
In my own experience, it is helpful to make clear this is not about making a political or religious statement, or even about what one ‘thinks’ about the song. The only way I have found for a fruitful discussion to take place is by keeping to one’s own experience.
Dialogue, in this usage, is for sharing experiences, not to convert, win an argument, or state a position.
That is a hard, sometimes painful, thing to do. But the rewards of it can be astounding if we are committed to listening.
Here are some possible questions that can be used to promote this dialogue:
1. What is your experience of the song?
2. What memories does it kick up in you?
3. Does the song remind you of any experience you have had or anyone you know has had?
4. In what way does this phrase relate to the song? “Understanding is the beginning of compassion.” --Thich Nhat Hanh
5. What emotions does the song evoke? Why?
6. That reminds me of…
When you have thought through or discussed some of these, you may want to ask what is a way you can build a bridge to the other side, whatever you consider the other side to be?
Please feel free to email questions, your experiences, or other questions that may be helpful to add to the list. Or add to the forum. Thanks!
What Others Are Saying
“As a songwriter, Neal Hagberg has clearly mastered the art of saying more with less.”
The Washington Post
“Neal Hagberg writes inspired originals.”
Minneapolis StarTribune
“Neal Hagberg's music is a bridge - it can help us recognize the humanity and doubts and struggles and fears we share with those we all too often consider the "other." Neal uses music, his first language, to tell hard truths beautifully. This is not background music. These are songs for the fully conscious (or those striving to be).
In these songs, Neal introduces us to people we may not be sure we wanted to meet, but their stories stay with us and change us. And that's a good thing.”
Julie Madden
Peace and Justice Ministries Coordinator
St. Joan of Arc, Minneapolis
“My students were provoked to think more deeply about the challenging issues addressed by Hagberg’s songs and to continue asking questions of themselves. I can’t wait to have him back.”
Jeff Dahlseid, Professor of Biochemistry
“I think that music/song provides an avenue to get people to think and talk about these
uncomfortable issues which we would rather avoid. And providing a human face, as Hagberg says, makes it both more immediate and personal; it underlines the human complexity - and cost - in ways that statistics and abstract arguments can’t. Neal’s is risky but important work.”
Florence Amamato, Professor of English and Ethics
“Neal Hagberg is a remarkable presence. With warmth, humor, an open and generous spirit, and a gift for mindful presence, Neal reflected with us on his own professional, artistic, and vocational journey, and on the power of story to form beliefs and world-views that animate meaningful action in the world. We were challenged and enlightened.”
Chris Johnson, Director
Center For Vocational Reflection
Gustavus Adolphus College
“Neal Hagberg opened up these fragile and offensive topics in a way that didn’t lend bias to his songs.”
“He did an amazing job of making us think, of facilitating a conversation, of causing us to deliberate over new ideas.”
“His songs helped me to reconsider many of the injustices that I have long placed in the closet of my mind to collect dust.”
“The music Hagberg has written has really begun to stimulate conversation among us, conversations I feel are essential to our society.”
“Neal has a beautiful voice and provocative stage presence that hopefully will spark conversations across this community. Together we can make a commitment to conversation.”
College students
"It's Not As Simple As It Seems" is one of the most provocative, challenging, disturbing and yet thoughtful and sensitive performances I've programmed in my 25-year career. Any college which truly wishes to confront the issues of bigotry and hatred should consider staging Neal Hagberg front and center.
